NFL Season Preview Series- AFC West

The Chiefs and the Chargers ruled the AFC West last season. Oakland made one of the biggest off season splashes by signing Antonio Brown as John Gruden tried to distract us from the mistake of getting rid of Khalil Mack. Here’s where the AFC is going into the 2019-20 season.

1. Denver Broncos

The Broncos are a hot mess, but Elway is no rookie

Last season: 6-10

Division finish: 3rd

Key off season additions: Joe Flacco

ESPN projected record: 8-8

Denver has a week one game against Oakland and they need to start the season off with a win. It’s been a rough go the past few seasons and Elway made some moves and it needs to pay off. Flacco isn’t elite and not their long term answer at QB and is more of a game manager at best at this point. Denver does have four tough road games in November and December, but the Broncos can get some early momentum and they end the regular season with back-to-back home games.

2. Oakland Raiders

AB is in Cali and so is his attitude

Since entering the league in 2010, Brown has totaled seven 1,000-yard seasons with the Steelers, and leads the NFL in both yards and receptions during that span, while his touchdown total ranks second and his four seasons of double-digit receiving scores are tied for second. Carr is completely healthy this year and Oakland is fired up to see what their Black and Silver bring to the Black Hole this year.

3. Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers offense can score! They look to catch the Chiefs this year.

Last season: 12-4

Division finish: 2nd

Off season key addition: Mike Pouncey, Virgil Green

ESPN projected record: 11-5

Chargers made the playoffs the first time since 2013 last season. Philip Rivers has thrown for over 4,000 yards in nine of his last ten seasons, and no less than 26 touchdowns for 10 years in a row. Keenan Allen is healthy and that’s explosiveness ready to go! Joey Bosa is a monster pash rusher and the defense is nothing to sleep on this year. Look for them to give the Chiefs a run for the division this year.

4. Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes is the real deal, there’s no denying this now. So what’s he do now that everyone knows

Last season: 12-4

Division finish: 1st

Key off season additions: Tyrann Mathieu, Bashaud Breeland

ESPN projected record: 11-5

Chiefs play three of their final four games against teams that made the 2018 postseason, including a trip to New England for the third consecutive season. If the Chiefs are to win a fourth straight AFC West title, they’d better have a lead heading into that final stretch. The Chargers will be biting at their heels the entire season.

This division will be fun to watch. The Chiefs and Chargers will score ALOT. If the Chiefs defense is even better. They will be hard to beat.
